Custom Fit Harnesses

ducktollerNot every dog will fit into our standard range of harnesses. This is often the case with cross breeds or dogs that are bigger than the breed standard. We know some harness manufacturers offer alternative ranges with more adjustment than their standard product, but here at Xtra Dog we know that this may not necessarily prove to be the perfect alternative which is why we offer a custom made harness in our walking range, the Zima multi-sport and the Zima X-back harnesses.

How does this work?
You measure your dog according to our sizing guide (below), email your measurements to info@xtradog.com and we will provide you with a quote for your custom fit harness. Remember that this harness is made especially for your dog, so measure him or her carefully as we are not able to accept returns with custom fits. We advise measuring your dog 3 times, and get someone to help, to make sure the dog is standing straight. Remember to measure 'dog not fur', especially when you are measuring long-haired breeds.

What does this cost?
Small sized fleece walking harnesses cost £28.60, £34.50 for the larger sizes. For Foam Walking harnesses small sizes £45.75 and £47.80 for larger sizes. For x-backs and multi-sport harnesses there is a £10.00 surcharge above the normal price.

How long will my harness take to be made?
We aim to get your custom fit walking harness to you within two weeks of the order being placed and paid for. X-backs, multi-sports and foam walking harnesses may take a bit longer as they are made in the USA.

A. From the point of the breastbone (central neck base - find the indentation near the base of the windpipe - start there) between the legs to about 2 inches (a hand's width on a medium or large dog) behind the front legs, where the girth strap will fit comfortably without rubbing on the dog's arm pits.

B. Measure the widest part of the dog's head

C. measure around the neck from the point of the breast bone all the way around. If you are unsure how to measure the neck watch the video below about sizing a sled dog

D. Measure around the ribcage of the dog behind its front legs

E. Let us know the weight, age and breed of the dog

We will have a demonstration video up here soon; in the meantime, we advise watching the video below about how to size an x-back as the method of measuring the dog's neck for an x-back harness is the same as it would be for measuring a dog for a walking harness. The video also shows you how your dog should stand to be measured.

Remember, always measure your dog at least 3 times to make sure you are getting consistent measurements.

A. Neck measurement. Measure from the breast bone (see above how to find it) all the way around the neck.

B. Length measurement. Start at the breast bone. Pull the tape measure from point of breast bone straight down the breast bone, between the front legs and continue by angling accross the rib cage, and up to base of the tail.
