Huskies On Tour 2011
Everyone loves huskies! These lovable dogs have been featured in many Hollywood movies, like Call of the Wild, Eight Below, Iron Will and Snow Dogs. But there is so much more to these dogs than just their looks and they are not the ideal pet for everyone. They need lots of exercise which has to be done on lead, as they have a high prey drive. Many husky owners choose to exercise their huskies in a safe way by letting them do what comes naturally pulling. These fun and safe sports include; Cani-X (cross country running with dogs), Dog scootering and/or by using a dry land rig (special laws apply) and very occasionally here in the UK, sledding.
Huskies have a lovely temperament and are great with children. The Siberian Husky Club of GB (Welfare) have put together a display looking at the history of the breed, explaining a bit about the breed as a whole and what they are like to live with. They will also show a few of the sports that can be enjoyed with these dogs. There will be displays of Cani-X, scootering and dogs pulling a dry land rig (if weather permits). The welfare dogs will also be on-hand during the day for” Hug-A-Husky” in the welfare tent that will be situated next to Xtra Dog on the showground. Where you will be able to see dog sledding equipment and find out more about the sports that these dogs can enjoy, and ask questions about the breed.
Tessa Wakeling from the husky club welfare explains:
“There are many huskies in need of new homes at the moment but it is very important to research the breed first, and a good place to meet huskies is at the Aviemore rally which takes place in Aviemore in Scotland every year in January.”

Marie Miller Live
Marie Miller is one of the UK’s leading dog trainers and behaviourists and is also one of the country’s highest qualified Tellington TTouch practitioners. She has been involved with dogs for more than 30 years and has worked with most breeds. Whether your best friend is a pet, an agility, flyball or obedience dog or you want to win at Crufts, or even if you have aspirations of being a dog musher Marie can offer you some amazing advice. As one of the founder members of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers she has a wealth of experience with many different breeds and types of dog. Have you heard of Tellington TTouch? Marie explains,
“Tellington TTouch is a positive and forward thinking method of working with animals. The combination of gentle ground work and body work exercises help to improve mental, physical and emotional balance, bringing an enhanced ability to learn and co-operate. It crosses language barriers and is now used in many different countries around the world. One of the most exciting things about this work is that it constantly evolves as we experiment and add more tools to our toolbox.”
Marie will be putting together a display of dog training techniques combining clicker training and Tellington TTouch. She will be inviting 4-legged spectators to join her in the arena and help their owners overcome problems that they may have. If you are a dog lover then Marie’s demonstration is not to be missed. Marie will also have a side arena next to the Xtra Dog tent where visitors can bring their dogs for one-one advice, or if you are interested in finding out more about Tellington TTouch Marie will be on-hand to provide more information.
