Skiers and snowboarders will know Steamboat as one of America’s favourite ski resorts from where the term 'champagne powder' was derived. Skiing or boarding at Steamboat offers trails for all levels from beginners to advanced and combines some of the most spectacular scenery found anywhere in the world.
The skiing heritage dates back to the early 1900s. Steamboat has produced more winter Olympians that any other town in North America, a record 69 and counting. In fact, Steamboat sent more athletes to both the 2002 (16 athletes) and 2006 (20 athletes) Games than many small countries.
When you think of legends in American skiing the name Billy Kidd, Steamboat’s director of skiing, is at the top of the list. Billy became America's hero back in the 1964 Olympics when he and teammate Jimmie Heuga became the first American men to win Olympic medals in skiing. For more than 35 years, Kidd has hosted a free ski clinic nearly every day, sharing his love of the sport with others.
