It is now only a few weeks until the dog world's biggest show on earth, Crufts. The dog show itself needs little introduction, but the event offers even more that that: displays, meet the breeds and, of course, shopping. We will be there - will you?
Xtra Dog has 3 pairs of tickets to give away for Crufts: click read more for details of how to enter our competition:
Xtra Dog will be in Hall One, Stand 125 and we have loads going on. Come and choose a new Spiffy Dog collar. Check out our own design of fleece walking harnesses available in a choice of 10 sizes or even a custom fit if your dog does not fit a standard size. There are many different colours to choose from.
We also have new foam harnesses, ideal for dogs that like to swim, as this material does not get wet or freeze. These are our design based on the thinking of the front part of an x-back sledding harness, but designed with two rings top and front so that it can be used with a double-ended lead to stop dogs pulling.
We will also have the Adanac range of sledding and working dog products from the USA. This includes the famous Zima x-back harness used by dog mushers around the world. We will also have Pawtrekker dog scooters on display.
Sarah Fisher Who brought Tellington TTouch to the UK, over 17 years ago, and who is the first Tellington TTouch Instructor in the UK, last year gave a lecture at Discover Dogs at Earls Court in London. From 1 January 2012 all pet dogs, cats and ferrets (including guide and hearing dogs) can enter or re-enter the UK from any country in the world without quarantine provided they meet the rules of the scheme, which will be different depending on the country or territory the pet is coming from.
Animals which do not meet all the rules must be licensed into quarantineuntil they are compliant. They might then be able to obtain early release if they can be shown to comply with the necessary pet travel requirements.
Click here to visit the DEFRA website to read the full details of the new rules.
At Discover Dogs visit us on stand 162 and see the range of dog walking harnesses designed by Marie Miller, Tellington TTouch harnesses designed by Sarah Fisher, sled dog harnesses and crashed tested car harnesses. Also see the full range of Spiffy Dog collars and leads, TTouch training equipment, Thundershirts, cool coats as well the award winning Dicky Bags and Pawtrekker dog scooters.
We also have some special guests. Tellington TTouch practitioners Marie Miller (P3) Laura Roelfsema (PIT) will be with us both days to talk about the amazing way that the TTouch method of training can help dogs. Marie is also a member of Association of Pet Dog Trainers' (UK) (no. 0130). TTouch is a method of working with animals without fear or force. The non-habitual movements release tension using gentle bodywork and physically balancing groundwork exercises. To find out more about Tellington TTouch visit our TTouch pages in the Dogucation Zone.
On Sunday we will also be welcoming James and Caroline Dunn from SARDA Cantech Search and Rescue Dogs. They will be joined by one of their rescue dogs and talking to visitors about the amazing work that they do in Kent.
Over and above this the event provides a fantastic opportunity for visitors to meet, greet and discover over 200 different breeds of purebred dog, and learn all about the distinctive personalities, traits and looks of each breed and how to buy the perfect canine partner.

Did you know any company can offer you any dog harness and tell you that it is suitable for the car and it does not need any specific safety testing? Would you buy a baby seat for a car that has not had proper car safety testing?
Beverley Cuddy, editor of Dogs Today was on Radio 5 Live talking about car harnesses, here is a transcript of what she said. Thank you Beverley for getting this message out there.
Talking about the laws surrounding restraining dogs...
"As the rest of Europe seems to be doing it automatically I think it is only a matter of time before we do too. If it's a clear rule I think people should know they should be doing it - We were all resistant to car safety belts for people, but when its the law you do it."
"I think the thing to notice here is at the moment when you are buying seat belts and car seats for babies there are standards you look for to make sure they are properly tested - there are not too many harnesses that are properly crash tested for dogs ....... At the moment anyone can sell you a harness and will not get done, they are not the same standards that you are getting for humans."
In the USA there is a V9DTPet Safety Durability test. The Bergan car harness offered by Xtra Dog conform to V9DT standards. Click here to order yours.
