Changes in UK Quarantine Regulations for Pets

sukiannFrom 1 January 2012 all pet dogs, cats and ferrets (including guide and hearing dogs) can enter or re-enter the UK from any country in the world without quarantine provided they meet the rules of the scheme, which will be different depending on the country or territory the pet is coming from.

Animals which do not meet all the rules must be licensed into quarantineuntil they are compliant. They might then be able to obtain early release if they can be shown to comply with the necessary pet travel requirements.

Click here to visit the DEFRA website to read the full details of the new rules.

How Safe Is Your Car Harness?

arapahoe-in-carDid you know any company can offer you any dog harness and tell you that it is suitable for the car and it does not need any specific safety testing? Would you buy a baby seat for a car that has not had proper car safety testing?

Beverley Cuddy, editor of Dogs Today was on Radio 5 Live talking about car harnesses, here is a transcript of what she said. Thank you Beverley for getting this message out there.

Talking about the laws surrounding restraining dogs...

"As the rest of Europe seems to be doing it automatically I think it is only a matter of time before  we do too. If it's a clear rule I think people should know they should be doing it - We were all resistant to car safety belts for people, but when its the law you do it."

"I think the thing to notice here is at the moment when you are buying seat belts and car seats for babies there are standards you look for to make sure they are properly tested - there are not too many harnesses that are properly crash tested for dogs ....... At the moment anyone can sell you a harness and will not get done, they are not the same standards that you are getting for humans."

In the USA there is a V9DTPet Safety Durability test. The Bergan car harness offered by Xtra Dog conform to V9DT standards. Click here to order yours.

Dogs Today Recommend Xtra Dog Harnesses

cover_currentwebLeading dog magazine Dogs Today included us in their stop dogs pulling feature in the July 2011 issue. A few months ago Commercial Director, Liz Dixon contacted us as she was having a problem stopping her young German Shepherd, Ferris from pulling on the lead. Xtra Dog's Alex Wilson travelled to Richmond Park in London and armed with a Marie Miller designed Xtra Dog walking harness, a double ended training lead and some basic ground work equipment.

The results were incredible - using Tellington TTouch groundwork techniques, and the Xtra Dog harness we had Ferris walking in balance very quickly.

Liz explains"At first, this was a constant interaction - pull and release (or melt away), ... but gradually, Ferris started to slow down and respond to the gently presure, eventually walking to heel without any intervention from me at all"

Spiffy-High-Rescrop

The well respected website Labradors International reviewed the Spiffy Dog Air Collar. Monty the chocolate Labrador gave our collar a thorough Lab Test, these were the results...

"I’m pretty sure you’ve had problems with smelly dog collars at some time or other writes Leslie Howard from Labradors International. Actually, what am I saying!? Of course you have, this is a site about Labradors and chances are, you’re here because you share your life with a Lab! They love water. They love mud. They love rolling in nasty things that we can’t even put a name to! Of course your Lab's collar stinks!!!! I’d heard the Spiffy Dog Air Collar could be an answer to this problem so Monty and I put it to the test ..."
